Breaking News! from Lynette Aitken, Fairtrade Schools Manager

Congratulations! You – Oaklands Catholic School and Sixth Form College – have been awarded Fairtrade School status for the coming year.

We hope that now you are a Fairtrade School you will continue to promote Fairtrade in the school and the wider community. It is thanks to the hard work by schools like yours that Fairtrade is benefiting so many farmers. Keep up the good work as you will need to renew your Fairtrade School status in a year’s time.

Update August 2010! Oaklands fairtrade status has been passed for another year!

As you may be aware, since the beginning of the year, a group of students from all years have been working together with a group of teachers, (about 40 students and 10 teachers) to achieve Fairtrade Status. Mr Sumba has been coordinating and leading this drive.

We took on this challenge because Fairtrade is an issue that many people around the country are interested in since it is one way of helping tackle the problem of poverty in the world. At Oaklands, apart from following our normal lessons, we are also committed to campaigning against injustices in the world. We believe that poverty in the world is not a misfortune but an injustice that must be fought and defeated.

The challenge is now on to make sure that we continue promoting Fairtrade in our school and local community so that in a year’s time, we can renew our status. Well done to the Fairtrade Team and everybody who has contributed to making this great achievement possible.

Fairtrade Policy Statement

As a Christian Community guided by the Gospel values of love, justice and compassion, we at Oaklands are committed to supporting Fairtrade wherever possible.

In particular our school will:

• Support a Fairtrade Steering Group and ensure that Fairtrade is part of the School Improvement plan
• Encourage the use of Fairtrade products wherever possible throughout the Oaklands Community
• Ensure learning about Fairtrade happens in a range of lessons and in whole school activities such as assemblies and Mass
