The LRC is at the heart of the school, providing resources to access knowledge and to promote reading for pleasure. The LRC is an essential department of Oaklands providing a flexible learning environment used regularly by the whole school community. The resources serve the curriculum needs of all departments.
Fortnightly library lessons are held for Years 7, 8 and 9 to develop information literacy skills, to promote reader development, to instil a love of reading and to encourage the borrowing of resources. This ensures that there is a positive attitude towards information literacy and promotes a reading culture throughout the school.
Reading, information and literacy skills are vitally important to today’s students; failure to read and evaluate information is at the heart of poor learning. Research has also evidenced that reading for pleasure has a significant impact on raising academic standards in all curriculum subjects. It is essential for students to become proficient in information literacy skills to enable them to learn how to locate information by using a variety of sources, how to select relevant information and how to use this information to complete their schoolwork. Therefore developing information literacy skills and a love of reading to support lifelong learning is of paramount importance.
The LRC is fully computerised using the Eclipse.Net management system. The full LRC catalogue is available to browse from any networked computer in school. To borrow resources students and staff use a biometric system called Identikit. All new students are registered on this system during the first few weeks of the autumn term. To register students simply touch a pad and the LRC computer instantly “recognises” them and records loans to their accounts. No fingerprint records are taken or stored on the computer and this system is only used in connection with borrowing resources from the LRC. All information is destroyed when the student leaves Oaklands. If any parent is concerned about this please contact Mrs Curtis, the LRC Manager, for further details.
The LRC has a warm, comfortable and welcoming environment. The students value the resources and services available to them and the facilities are well utilized during break times with maximum numbers often reached during lunch times. An enthusiastic group of student librarians are an immense help to Mrs Curtis during break times.
The opening times for the LRC are as follows:
8.30 am – 4.30 pm Monday to Thursday
8.30 am – 4.00 pm Fridays
