Geography
Welcome to the Oaklands Geography department
The Geography Department was inspected by Ofsted on the 12th and 13th of May 2009 and was awarded the highest grade of ‘Oustanding’. The full report (external link to Ofsted site) can be found by clicking here.
Students at Oaklands are taught by five full time specialist Geographers in the recently built John Paul II block.
The use of ICT in Geography at Oaklands has grown with improvements in teachers’ skills, better access to the Internet and high quality software. Digital projectors and interactive whiteboards have added positively to geography teaching at Oaklands, particularly since the construction of the new John Paul II block as the department has access to a suite of 30 computers. All students have the opportunity to use software such as AEGIS3, Google Earth and Info Mapper combined with other generic Microsoft Office software.
All the members of the department believe in the inclusion of fieldwork in the Geography curriculum. It is our belief that students gain a huge amount from fieldwork- not just the Geographical learning, but also personal development as many of the activities require teamwork and interaction with the public in activities such as questionnaires. Further information can be found in our KS3 and KS4 pages.
We offer international fieldwork, having visited Iceland in 2006, 2008, 2010 and 2012. The success of these resulted in a further trip being added and we now visit Sicily on what is likely to be a bi-annual basis. You can read about these trips by accessing the page link below.
We have a very successful 6th form Geography course, with three AS groups and two A2 groups in September 2012. Futher information can be found by clicking the link below.
