SPANISH GCSE

With more than 400 million speakers around the world and as the official language of 21 countries, Spanish is now the fourth most spoken language around the globe. As well as helping students to understand other European cultures, GCSE in Spanish develops the vital skills of communication, reading and writing in the target language.  It will give you a useful skill when you go on holiday abroad, improve your listening, communication and memory skills, enable you to learn another foreign language when you are older, and enable you to work abroad or travel abroad with your job.

Four themes are covered:

  1. My World
  2. Holidays and Travel
  3. Work and Lifestyle
  4. Young Person in Society 

Assessment

The 4 skills of Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing are assessed.  Candidates are entered for the various examinations according to their ability, enthusiasm and effort.   www.edexcelgcse.co.uk/spanish

Listening – 20%     Reading – 20%

Speaking – 30%     Writing – 30% 

 The Writing paper consists of 2 pieces of controlled coursework

SPANISH VOCATIONAL (OCR)

The course, awarded by Oxford & Cambridge Examination Board,  is aimed at those students who prefer a more vocational background and it provides a practical solution to certifying language competency.  It will improve your listening and communication skills, will be useful when you go on holiday and will also improve your ability to learn other languages later in life.  75% of students leave school with no language qualification at all and having this certificate will be a positive addition to your CV when you apply for jobs.

  • Area B    Self, Family & Friends + Freetime and Social Activities.
  • Area C    Home town and shopping
  • Area D    Employment and Communication
  • Area E    Food & Drink, Holiday & Transport

 Assessment

Assignment is ongoing over two years through 10 assessments.  It is a modular system which is internally marked.  The written element is assessed by short pieces of coursework.  There is no final examination and there are 3 pass grades.
