Learning Support

Welcome to Learning Support

In the Learning Support Department we value the unique qualities of every child and enjoy the challenge each student brings.  As part of the Oaklands pastoral and academic support team, we welcome the diverse nature of our community and work hard to help all students overcome any barriers to their learning,  either as part of a long term provision plan or for a limited time to overcome a specific learning difficulty.

We provide a positive environment in order to help students develop greater self-belief and determination and to look for ways to enhance their skills and develop strategies to overcome any diversity.

Academic, social or emotional support may be provided in the classroom or as part of a small intervention group in our Bartimaeus Centre.  Whatever the support or need, students can be sure that they will receive the very best of attention and care from our well qualified and supportive learning support staff.

We provide many clubs to help students through their years here at Oaklands:

Bartimaeus Centre

The Bartimaeus Centre is used for short term literacy and numeracy intervention programmes as well as for reflection groups. These groups provide support not only for learning but also enable students to improve peer relationships through structured activities and mentoring. The Bartimaeus Centre will also be used this year to help students reflect on their behaviour and identify strategies to help them in the classroom.

Homework Club

For years 7-9 to deal with homework needs, TA support, use of ICT and help with planning

Coursework Support

For years 10 and 11. All subjects covered. To help plan and organize coursework, including time management skills and advice on use of ICT, layout and proof-reading skills.

Lunchtime Games Club

Aimed at students who are happier in a quiet environment. There are board games, quizzes and competitions.

Assessment and Action

Students with difficulties are tested to ascertain their areas of need. Those found to have problems with reading, writing or spelling are given the opportunity to attend an intervention programme.

Alpha Smarts & Neos

These are electronic notepads for students who need additional writing support.

Touch Typing/Handwriting

This is aimed at children who use Alpha Smarts and Neos on a regular basis to increase their speed and confidence using word processing and to develop handwriting skills.

Access to Counselling

Students with personal issues are able to speak in confidence with the school chaplain. If they have educational concerns they can speak to Mrs Rowsell at any time

Football and Schools Together (FAST)

This is a Football and Schools together (FAST) new initiative and the school has formed a link with Portsmouth Football Club to raise achievement by linking homework to football and fitness training with coaches from the club. Portsmouth Football Club is also involved with a paired reading scheme.
