Science at KS4
This course covers the whole Programme of Study of the National Curriculum for Science, including investigations and the areas known as Biology, Chemistry, Physics.
Course Description
KS4 Science will develop a critical approach to scientific evidence and methods, acquire and apply skills, knowledge and understanding of how science works and its essential role in society. However, thre are a number of options that the students have:
OPTION 1
Students can choose to study GCSE Core Science and most will continue to do GCSE Additional Science. This is suitable for all students achieving a Level 6 or above in Year 9. The Additional Science together with an award in GCSE Core Science provides an equivalent to the previous GCSE Double Award. In GCSE Additional Science pupils will develop their understanding and skills in ways that provide the basis for further studies in science and related areas. The new courses aim to emphasise the following points, within the three areas of Biology, Chemistry and Physics.
- Evaluating evidence and the implications of science for society;
- Explaining, theorising and modelling in science.
As the Additional Science is a more demanding course, students who are unable to develop a sound understanding by the end of Year 10 will study Human Physiology and Health in Year 11.
OPTION 2
Students can choose to study OCR Nationals Certificate in Science. This course is suitable for all students who achieve at least a Level 5 in KS3. This will include scientific investigations into forensic, sport and food science, instead of the traditional Physics, Chemistry and Biology.
A pass on the Nationals Certificate qualification is equivalent to 4 A*-C’s at GCSE’s. It is designed for students who plan to do Applied Science A- Levels.
OPTION 3
Students can choose to study OCR Nationals Award in Science plus study for a BTEC in Horticulture. This course is suitable for all students who achieve at least a Level 4 in KS3. This will include scientific investigations into forensic, sport and food science, instead of the traditional Physics, Chemistry and Biology
A pass on the Nationals Award qualifications is equivalent to 2 A*-C’s at GCSE’s.
OPTION 4
For students with a firm determination to broaden their horizons further in science, there is an additional opportunity to do Separate Sciences. This is suitable for students achieving Level 6+ at KS3.
