Child Development
In this GCSE course, students will be able to increase their own knowledge and understanding of human needs in a diverse society. Skills and knowledge acquired will be relevant and transferable.
Course Description
Students will acquire knowledge and understanding about the following five areas which will be taught through an integrated approach.
- Parenthood
- Pregnancy
- Diet, health and care of children
- Development of children
- Support for parents and children
Over the two years, students will produce two pieces of coursework, called controlled assessments.
- A piece of research which they plan, carry out, collate, analyse and evaluate and draw to a conclusion. There will be a choice of topics.
- A Child Study in which they observe a single child under the age of 4. They will carry out an introductory visit, complete some research and then carry out 4 further visits. They will then evaluate their child’s progress.
Assessment
Research Task: 20% - 7 hours
Child Study: 40% - 20 hours
Written Paper: 40% - 1½ hours
