    Oaklands Catholic School and Sixth Form college

    A nail-biting wait for this year's GCSE  results came to an end today Thursday, 24nd August, with students at Oaklands Catholic School, receiving news that would shape their future.

    This year was always going to be different with both English and Maths exams being more rigorous and graded under the new 9-1 system. These changes have drawn a line under previous statistics making it impossible to make accurate comparisons with historic data.

    The school is delighted to report a very successful year’s GCSE results.  72 % of students at the school achieved grade 4 or above in English and Math this was a fantastic result from a comprehensive intake of students.

    A large number of students from the year group would now be going on to study ‘A’ levels within the school Sixth Form.

    Mr Quinn Said, “Oaklands school is a mixed ability Comprehensive school, so these are a very pleasing set of results. I am delighted that so many students of all abilities, have achieved their full potential.  The approach of the school over a number of years has been to ensure that all pupils take a broad and balanced curriculum with GCSE exams being at the core of this.”

    There were many exceptional performances including

    Angus Lochrane achieved 9 A-A* and 2 grade 9s and I grade 8
    Judy Quinn  who achieved 10 A-A* and 3 grade 9s
    Layana Sani who achieved 10 A-A* and 3 grade 9s
    James Saunders achieved 9 A-A* and 3 grade 9s
    Ben Strutt 9 A-A* and 2 grade 9s and 1 grade 8

    These excellent results demonstrate the effectiveness of high quality teaching coupled with strong management systems and team work. Oaklands has achieved a consistently high standard of examination results despite the turbulence in the examination system.

    Mr Quinn went on to say, “I do not want to take anything away from their success, year on year students work harder and harder. Despite the changes, I am pleased  that in the reformed subjects 60% of the grades were level 5 or above compared with approximately 54% nationally and at the top end 5.5% were grade 9 compared with approximately 3.5% nationally. We also expect our Ebac figure, representing the toughest subjects, to remain high compared with national outcomes.  However we must realise that the system is in flux and we should expect a re-calibration of examination performance. Comparisons can no longer be made between this year and last.”

    A level Results  2017

    Oaklands Catholic comprehensive celebrates the highest number of students gaining places at Oxbridge for over 10 Years.

    Another high set  of ‘A’ level examination results is today being celebrated by students and staff at Oaklands Catholic School, with a phenomenal 99.4%.

    Despite the additional complexity of ‘A’ Levels the number of A and A* grades has risen to 19% compared with 15.5% last year. The number of grades at A* to ‘C’ continued at a high level of 71%, 100% of students achieved at least 1 A level pass.

    Headteacher, Matthew Quinn  said, “  I am delighted with this set of results- absolutely brilliant!  They are a fitting tribute to the Sixth Form team. The results are a credit to the hard work of students and teachers alike. It is fantastic to see the progress made by many of our students from entry into Year 7 through to Year 13.

    University entrance will be interesting this year, many of the top universities have been unsuccessful in filling high profile courses so I think we will see some movement by applicants over the next few days. This year at Oaklands 16 students have unconditional offers, this is unprecedented”.

    Mr Quinn went on to say, “ Five  students have been successful in gaining places at Oxford or Cambridge, others on other highly competitive courses.

    Sophie Adams achieved 2 A* and one A grade;

    Thomas  Ellis achieved 3 A* grades;

    Helena Cox-Smith achieved 1 A* and 2 A grades;

    Joseph Hurd 2 A* and 2 A grades;

    Alex Lane achieved 1 A* and 2 A grades;

    Kate McMahon achieved 3 A* grades;

    Becky O’Rourke achieved 3 A* grades;

    David Rennie achieved 2 A* and 2 A grades

    Jack Silvester achieved 4  A* grades.

    Other students were equally successful exceeding expectation. In addition to university entrance  we have many students who have been successful in competing for high quality apprenticeships. This is an outstanding performance from a comprehensive intake of students.

    This is the first year of the new ‘A’ level structure. Under the new system all A-level exams will take place at the end of Year 13 in many courses, this removes the option to retake units and modules over the two year course to boost grades. Across the board, there is also a reduction in  coursework and fewer practical assessments. All of this will have an impact on outcomes over the next few years.

    These results continued to build on our established record of success  and excellence across the whole range of subjects. We wish all our students completing their sixth form this year every success for the next stage of their education”.
