English Language and Literature

We all use language – but how many of us understand the language we use? English Language and literature is a fascinating subject because of its unique role in capturing the breadth of human thought and endeavour. You will enjoy discovering how people use words for different purposes and audiences. Understanding how language works helps us to communicate effectively and confidently. Language and Literature at A level provide many opportunities to develop your own writing and to make you an independent, reflective and confident reader. It will help you to further understand yourself and the world in which you are. The qualification supports a wide range of courses at university including other Arts, English Literature, or Humanities subjects. It provides a useful entry level to careers in advertising, writing, the media – including radio and television – journalism, drama and a wide range of professions.

English Literature

Do you have a love of reading and a willingness to explore through discussions, essays, presentations, how different writers tell narratives in different ways? This course will develop your analytical skills and essay writing, as well as offering opportunities to explore who we are and how we live. An A level in Literature leads on naturally to higher education courses in English and other Arts or Humanities subjects, including Law. Literature also provides a useful entry qualification for careers in advertising, writing, the media – including television and radio – journalism, drama, education, personnel and industrial management and a wide range of professions.
